Six Finalists Interviewed for KNCHR Chair Post

The Selection Panel tasked with identifying suitable candidates for the role of Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) today completed interviews for six finalists.

The panel, chaired by Dr. Irene C. Asienga, conducted the interviews in Nairobi as part of its commitment to a transparent and merit-based recruitment process.

Appointed via Gazette Notice No. 4651 of April 8, 2025, the Panel was sworn in on April 23 and officially inaugurated by the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development & Special Programs on April 28, 2025.

Since its inception, the Panel has pledged to uphold the values of integrity, fairness, and accountability throughout the selection process.

The call for applications, published in local dailies on April 30, attracted 17 applicants by the May 13 deadline. In accordance with Section 10(1) of the KNCHR Act and Chapter Six of the Constitution, the Panel shortlisted six candidates who met the stringent criteria, including a minimum of fifteen years’ experience in law and human rights, a recognized university degree, and a track record of integrity.

The shortlisted candidates' names and qualifications were made public through Gazette Notice No. 6666 and published in national newspapers on May 23, 2025, in a continued effort to promote transparency.

The six candidates interviewed today were Victor Okoth from Nakuru County, Selina Amsugut from Trans Nzoia County, Claris Awour, Edward Katama also from Trans Nzoia County, Duncan Oburu from Homa Bay County, and Michael Peter Otieno from Siaya County.

Upon conclusion of the interview process, the Panel will forward three names to His Excellency the President, who will appoint the next Chairperson of the KNCHR from among the recommended nominees.
